Understanding gemstone descriptions

Every gemstone on our website is represented with a photograph and detailed description on the gemstone detail page and a general overview of the gemstone variety in the Learning Center.

All photographs are taken with a digital camera and are actual photographs of each of the gemstones in our inventory. We do our best to show an image that is as close to the actual gemstone as possible. We do not editing our images with saturation or hue. Please note, that not eye visible inclusions can be seen on the picture. That happens because our photos are taken at high magnification.

Our verbalization of color is based on the GIA/Munsell color grading system. The Munsell color-order system is a way of precisely specifying colors and showing the relationships among colors. Every color has three qualities or attributes: hue, value, and chroma. The GIA terms are hue, tone, and saturation but the meaning is the same. You can find detailed color descriptions, by clicking the color description link on every gemstone detail page.

Color correct gemstone photography is our ultimate objective and in most cases the colors of our images will be even more specific than the verbal description. However, since the colors of images do show some variations depending on the computer, the screen settings, and the monitor quality, it is important to consider both the image and the color description.

Our verbalization of gemstone enhancements fully comply with the FTC Guides. With the exception of the normal fashioning (cutting and polishing) of a diamond and other gemstone.

Because of the complexity of the "sliding scale" for clarity from GIA standards, we describe clarity for all gemstones on the same scale on our website, regardless of whether the gemstone is a Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3 gemstone. Therefore, a gemstone that is described as "eye-clean" will not have eye-visible inclusions, whether the stone is a Type 1 (Tanzanite, for example), Type 2 (Garnet, for example), or Type 3 (Emerald, for example), in the clarity descriptions on our website.

  • What is the difference between "Shape" and "Cutting"?

Shape refers to the general outward appearance of the gemstone, (such as round, emerald, or pear). Cut or cutting is a reference to the gemstone´s reflective qualities, not the shape.

A good cut gives a gemstone its brilliance, which is that brightness that seems to come from the very heart of a gemstone. The angles and finish of any gemstone are what determine its ability to handle light, which leads to brilliance.

  • My gemstone looks smaller than I expected it to be, how do I know that the advertised carat weight is correct?

The only information we can give you about a particular gemstone is what we display on the gemstone detail page for that gemstone. If you don´t find the information there, click "Ask a question" and we will get back to you within 24 hours.

  • Need more information about a gemstone?

The carat weight and dimensions for each stone have been checked and double-checked here at the Echinastone.com laboratory. All of our gemstone measurements have been made in millimeters and the gemstone weight measured and reported in carats.

The pictures of the gemstones on our website are being viewed under magnification. You should look at the dimensions for the stone from the gemstone description and obtain a measuring device to get an accurate idea of how large the gemstone you are considering purchasing will appear "face-up".
