The stone of purity and innocence
A gem of excellent density and sparkle. The zircon rates highest among all gem-quality stones on the specific-gravity scale, and only diamond has a higher reflective index.
Blue zircon is the most popular variety among consumers. This lovely blue gem begins its life as a rather unattractive dark brown stone, found primarily in Thailand.
Heat and pressure transform it into the blue or colorless variety. Through certain modifications in the enhancement process, these brown gems can also be heated to a sparkling yellow hue.
Interestingly, if the blue gem reverts to brown as a result of exposure to the elements, it can be returned to its blue color by subjecting it to additional heat treatments.
The honey zircon (also known as hyacinth) is well known throughout the jewelry world, but it has never really caught on with modern consumers.
Every so often, when earth tones rule the fashion market, honey zircon temporarily comes back into style, yet it has never been able to establish a place of importance.
Ironically, heating a honey zircon will turn the gem colorless or blue.
Although honey zircon is a minor player today, this was not always the case.
In fact, it was once so popular that for a while it seemed to become extinct.
Zircon Physical Properties
The physical properties of the gemstone, it hardness, specific
density and the way they break -- depend on chemical bonding and
