 Chrysoprase is the most valuable member of the chalcedony mineral group. The stones gets its apple green color from the presence of nickel in the crystal. Large broken pieces are often full of fissures with irregular colors. Color can fade in sunlight and when heated (be careful when soldering). But colors may recover under moist storage.
Chrysoprase is usually translucent, but may become opaque in poorer quality material. A small proportion of stone is semi-transparent to transparent and, if of good colour, is highly prized and valued.
The Greeks, Romans, and the Egyptians used chrysoprase in jewelry and other ornamental objects and because of its semi-opaque green color.
